Our Urban Homestead Now Has a Name!

December 26, 2016

I’ve mentioned before that we are working to transform our in-town home into an urban homestead. One of the places I mentioned that is here. I grew up in a lot of rural and small town areas. Places of business on farms/ranches had names. Even stores had names other than “Wal-Mart” or “Safeway.” There is something very appealing to me about remembering the way people in my early years in North Carolina would refer to “AP Henry’s store.” They would do the same thing when talking about a farm. When we moved west, we discovered, of course, that ranches had names too (and not just Texas’ King Ranch). So, the question became, what to call our little urban homestead, at least for blogging purposes?

I really wanted to use part of my online identity as part of the name. And, we are in west Texas, so calling it some sort of ranch seemed reasonable, even if rabbits and chickens are our primary livestock. Then I realized that “Mustang Ranch” is already taken by a Nevada concern with a significantly different focus than ours. Ditto for both “Bunny Ranch” and “Chicken Ranch.” Life is unfair like that. What to do. For now, until and unless something better occurs to me, we are the “RM Ranch” for blogging type reference. I was really liking Mustang Ranch…

If you think of something better, let me know.
